The Bionic Ear Institute (BEI) is an independent, non-profit, research organisation working in the field of medical bionics - the replacement or enhancement of organs or other body parts with engineered devices.
It was established in 1983 to continue innovative research on the bionic ear but our experience and discoveries have led to developments in other areas of medical bionics and we are now focussing on four key research areas -
A bionic eye
that will provide independence for the blind and will eventually allow them to read large format print
Nanotechnology-based, targeted drug delivery systems
for the efficient delivery of therapeutic drugs without adverse side effects
Implantable devices designed to monitor, diagnose and treat a variety of neurological disorders including epileptic seizures
A hi-fidelity bionic ear that will improve speech understanding in noisy environments and provide the gift of music for deaf patients.
Using a multidisciplinary approach, along with proven experience of working from conception to commercialisation, this research aims to deliver technologies to secure better health outcomes for people, reducing the burden of disease and disabilities.
Our researchers come from a diverse range of disciplines including neurology, biology, audiology, physiology, engineering, clinical research, speech science, mathematics and materials science.
The BEI works closely with many networks and collaborators.
