Peripheral Nerve Repair Program
TRAUMATIC DAMAGE to nerves causes catastrophic loss of function in organ systems controlled by nerves. Bionic Technologies Australia's Peripheral Nerve Repair Program utilises polymer scaffold tubes with inbuilt features to encourage nerve growth. Our research is initially aimed at repairing traumatic nerve damage in limbs.
The aim of this project is to develop a polymer device that facilitates peripheral nerve repair.
Designed to replace a segment of damaged nerve, the device-under-development will be sutured between the distal and proximal ends of the nerve and regrowth should occur inside the conduit.
The system consists of neurofacilitative polymers and media designed to encourage neuoregeneration.
Bioresorbable polymer configurations will be used which will provide agents that promote proper regrowth of damaged nerves.
The project will be conducted by Bionic Technologies Australia as a collaboration between The Bionic Ear Institute, St Vincent’s Hospital, CSIRO (via the divisions of Molecular Health Technology and Textile Fibre and Technology), PolyNovo Biomaterials and the University of Wollongong with key collaborative input from Robert Kapsa (BEI), Louis Kyratzis (CSIRO), Mike O'Shea ( CSIRO) and Gordon Wallace (UoW).
