About the Cochlear Implant Clinic
The
Cochlear Implant Clinic (CIC) is an internationally renowned team of
healthcare professionals dedicated to offering the maximum improvement
in quality of life to the widest possible population of severely hearing
impaired adults and children.
Based at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, as
a joint University of Melbourne and hospital clinic, the team is made
up of ENT surgeons and clinicians (audiologists & speech pathologists)
offering specialist medical, audiological and speech pathology services
to people with significant hearing impairments.
Following the pioneering work of Professor
Graeme Clark with the first multi-channel cochlear implant in 1978,
the CIC was established in 1982. Since this time the CIC has worked
closely with the University of Melbourne, the Bionic Ear Institute and
Cochlear Ltd, to provide implants and hearing to over 800 people, ranging
from 7 months to 89 years old.
The CIC has been involved in pioneering research into outcomes and
management of cochlear implant recipients. Surgical techniques, and
research studies are constantly being developed to keep the CIC standards
at the forefront of the cochlear implant field.
