The Cochlear Implant Clinic

Recipient Information

Measuring outcomes at the Melbourne CIC

During the preoperative evaluation, clinicians and surgeons work with patients to help determine what success will mean to them. For some people, success may mean improved speech perception, or greater confidence when speaking. For others it may mean a greater awareness of environmental sounds, eg the doorbell, the telephone. For children success may mean the development of speech and language, clearer speech, or the ability to identify voices or other sounds in their environment.

Success for each person is different, and clinicians and patients work together to gain an understanding of what successful use of the cochlear implant means to each patient and family that comes into the CIC programme. After the procedure, patients and families are encouraged to work towards attainable goals.
