Overview

 

The Department of Otolaryngology undertakes research to improve hearing and communication for children and adults who suffer from hearing loss.

The Australian Bionic Ear (Cochlear Implant) was developed as a result of this research and now provides hearing to over 50,000 completely or profoundly deaf people in 55 countries.

The multidisciplinary research group is based in East Melbourne, where several research teams pursue various aspects of hearing science.

The Department also offers a range of Postgraduate studies, including studies in the field of Audiology through the School of Audiology.

The Head of Department is Professor Richard Dowell (BSc Melb. MSc Melb. MAud Melb. PhD Melb. DipAud SA(CCP)), Professor of Audiology and Speech Science.

Professor Graeme Clark was the Foundation Chair of the Department until December 2003. He now holds the honorary position of Laureate Professor Emeritus, and remains closely associated with the Department through his directorship of The Bionic Ear Institute.
