With normal hearing, sound vibrations pass along the ear canal to the ear drum and then via the middle ear bones to the sense organ of hearing or organ of Corti, housed in the cochlea or inner ear (top). Hair cells in the organ of Corti (centre and bottom) convert the vibrations into neural responses that are then transmitted to the brain where they are interpreted as sound.
