BIONIC VISION

Research programs Bionic Vision

We are developing a bionic implant capable of restoring limited vision to people suffering from eye diseases such as macular degeneration, which is responsible for 48% of all blindness in Australia, and Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative genetic eye condition.

How does the bionic eye work?

What will you see through a bionic eye?

A video camera fitted to a pair of glasses will capture and process images. These images are sent wirelessly to a bionic implant at the back of the eye which stimulates dormant optic nerves to generate points of light (phosphenes) that form the basis of images in the brain.

Bionic Eye Projects

We are using our engineering expertise to develop new electrodes and our experience in safety and biocompatibilty studies
to establish safe surgical procedures and electrical stimulation.
