Many of the genes causing human inherited hearing loss (HL) are yet to be identified (Finsterer, 2005).

We have created mouse models of hereditary HL using the random point mutagen ethylnitrosourea. Thirteen independent mutant mouse lines have been chosen for detailed characterisation of their HL and identification of the gene harbouring the causative mutation. Some of the mutants display high frequency HL, some low frequency HL and some a reduction in number of auditory brainstem response (ABR) peaks. Some mutants also display vestibular defects such as circling, head-bobbing and one displays age-related shaking. Some mutants have loss of hair cells in the cochlea. We have three independent mutants with dominant low acoustic startle response and recessive ABR thresholds >100dB SPL.

Identification of the mutations causing HL in these mutant mice will allow us to identify genes causing inherited HL in humans.
